Turning Up The Intensity

Ireland Tour Day 5:

This morning we left at 8:30a for Derry and stopped at Westport on the way to Drumcliffe.

At Drumcliffe were a cathedral and the grave of George Yeats - a famous Irish poet. According to one of his poems, it was one of Yeats' final wishes to be buried here:

"Under bare Ben Bulben's head
In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid.
An ancestor was rector there
Long years ago, a church stands near,
By the road an ancient cross.
No marble, no conventional phrase;
On limestone quarried near the spot
By his command these words are cut:

Cast a cold eye
On life, on death.
Horseman, pass by!

When we got to Derry we went on a walking tour with lots of murals and chaotic Northern Irish history. Afterward YK and I went to a restaurant in the main square where we got a couple stakes, chips and a bottle of Rose for £10. I also got a free hat from the bar attendant while playing the souvenir game - our guide told us to try and get a free souvenir from whomever would give us one, best souvenir wins.

While we were eating some of the Loyalist locals lit up a bonfire covered in flags - a likely symbol of their political stance against independence.
